How an ageing population is changing home design

‘Population Ageing’ is a global phenomenon, and one that shows no signs of slowing down.  Since 1982, the UK population has increased year on year.

Today, there are 962 million people in the world aged 60 or over. In 2015 there were around 901 million people aged 60 or over; more than twice the number in 2000. It is estimated that by 2050, this will have increased to over 2 billion.

How does this affect the structure of the population in the UK?

In the UK, there are currently almost 12 million people aged 65 or over. There are 1.6 million people aged 85+, over 500,000 are 90 and there are almost 15,000 centurions. By 2050, one in four people in the UK will be aged 65 years or over; an increase from the 2018 statistic of one in five.

These figures and statistics aren’t numbers to be ignored; a growing and ageing population impacts how we live our lives, and how we design our homes. Currently, there are approximately 67 million people in the UK, and almost 25 million homes. Almost a third of those homes are headed by someone aged 65 or over, and 64% of homes owned outright, are done so by someone over 65 or over.

It’s important to consider these demographics, and understand how homes need to support our ageing population. As home owners continue to age, houses need to be able to accommodate the needs of older residents – as well as considering the rise in multi-generational living. Arthritis and back pain are both common conditions in older age, so homes should be designed to be both accessible and comfortable.
