Quality care in demand more than ever

With a growing population, increase in life expectancy and more people living longer with complex health issues, it is no surprise that the care sector is under growing pressure. In the UK, the care sector is currently worth almost £16 million a year, with over 410,000 people in residential care.

Between 2017 and 2040 the population of people aged 65 and over is expected to rise by 49%. The number of people aged over 85 - those most likely to require health and social care services - is expected to almost double from 1.4 to 2.7 million, over the same time period.

In the UK, there are currently 19,000 care, nursing and residential homes providing adult and elderly care. A number that is on the increase. The current rate of care home development is 5,000-6,000 new beds each year. Demand however is expected to increase by 9,000 a year; which would clearly leave a huge shortfall.

As the need for care homes increases, so too has the requirement for care at home. Since 2010, there has been a growth in home care agencies of more than 2,900. As the demand for care home places grow with waiting lists or simply no places available, care at home is now a viable, and often, preferable option. Many people prefer to stay in their own homes and have help when they require it with employed carers or family members providing the care they need. For example, 39% of dementia sufferers aged over 65 are living in care homes, yet 61% still live at home or within the community.

As the demand grows for social care in the UK, we need to ensure the environment in which care is provided is suitable and of a high standard; whether that care is given at home or within a care home.
