WHY DOES TRAYMATE BY TROJAN MANUFACTURE GEL COAT TRAYS OVER APS CAP ACRYLIC TRAYS?
By David Mosley, 25.06.25
There are three main materials used as a surface finish on nearly all shower trays: gel coat, acrylic, and enamel steel.
When selecting a shower tray for your bathroom, the material choice significantly impacts aesthetics, durability, functionality, and even environmental sustainability.
The two most popular materials are gel coat and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) cap acrylic. Each has distinct characteristics, and their market preferences—particularly between Europe and the United Kingdom—highlight differing priorities.
In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences between these materials, emphasising gel coat’s popularity in Europe for its quality, design flexibility, longevity, and significant environmental advantages, whilst the UK market often favours the more budget-friendly ABS cap acrylic trays. This cheaper tray can be at the cost of aesthetics, which is why we decided to focus on manufacturing our Traymate shower trays with gel coat, to ensure we’re maintaining our customer promise.

What Is a Gel Coat Shower Tray?
Gel coat shower trays are crafted from a composite material, typically a blend of resin and fillers, coated with a layer of gel coat. This non-porous surface resists scratches, stains, and—if marine-grade gel coat is used—is UV resistant.
The gel coat will mirror the surface finish of the mould and can produce a glossy finish or a matt slate one. Regardless, the aim should be for a premium look and feel. The manufacturing process of gel coat trays allows for extensive design flexibility, texture, and colour, making gel coat trays ideal for mid to upper-market bathrooms.
What Is an ABS Cap Acrylic Tray?
ABS cap acrylic trays consist of a plastic substrate, often reinforced with composite materials, topped with a very thin acrylic layer (usually 10% of the pre-moulded plastic sheet). This acrylic cap provides a smooth, glossy finish, whilst the ABS base ensures structural rigidity. These trays are cost-effective due to the ability to mass produce product from moulded “shower tray skins”, appealing to budget-conscious consumers.

1. Durability and Longevity
Gel coat trays are exceptionally durable, with a gel coat layer that resists scratches, chips, and chemical damage. With proper care, these trays can last decades without losing their shine or strength. This longevity is a key reason why European consumers, who value enduring quality, prefer gel coat.
ABS cap acrylic trays are reasonably durable but less resilient. The thin acrylic layer is prone to scratches. Whilst sufficient for budget-conscious buyers, they don’t match gel coat’s long-term durability.
2. Design Flexibility
Gel coat’s versatility allows for diverse shapes, sizes, and textures, from sleek, modern designs to stone-like finishes. This adaptability caters to Europe’s demand for customised, high-quality bathroom aesthetics. The material also supports vibrant, UV stable colours, enhancing design possibilities.
Limited by manufacturing constraints, ABS cap acrylic trays offer simpler shapes and fewer customisation options. Whilst functional, they lack gel coat’s bespoke appeal, aligning with the UK’s preference for cost over customisation.
3. Aesthetic Appeal
The glossy, premium finish of gel coat trays exudes luxury and maintains its vibrancy over time. In Europe, where bathrooms are seen as spaces for style and relaxation, gel coat’s aesthetic superiority is a major draw.
ABS cap acrylic trays provide a glossy finish, but their thinner acrylic layer may dull or scratch over time, reducing visual appeal. For UK consumers prioritising affordability, this is often a minor trade-off.
4. Weight and Installation
Advances in material technology are enabling gel coat manufacturers to reduce weight without compromising on mechanical bonds and the strength this brings. Heavier due to their composite structure, gel coat trays require professional installation often on a bed of a weak sand and cement, which European homeowners, investing in high-end renovations, are willing to accommodate for superior quality.
ABS cap acrylic trays appeal to DIY enthusiasts and cost-conscious UK consumers as they are easier to install and therefore minimise labour costs.
5. Cost
More expensive due to premium materials and complex manufacturing, gel coat trays are seen as a worthwhile investment in Europe, where quality and longevity take precedence.
More affordable, ABS cap acrylic trays dominate the UK market, where price sensitivity often drives decisions, despite their shorter lifespan.
6. Environmental Advantages
Gel coat trays offer significant environmental benefits, particularly in their longevity and recyclability. Their durability reduces the need for frequent replacements, lowering resource consumption and waste over time. Additionally, many gel coat formulations use bio-based or low-VOC (volatile organic compound) resins, minimising environmental harm during production.

At Traymate’s new facility there are recycling processes for composite materials, further enhancing sustainability. In Europe, where eco-conscious design is increasingly prioritised, these factors make gel coat a preferred choice.
ABS cap acrylic trays have a less favourable environmental profile. The production of ABS, a petroleum-based plastic, involves higher carbon emissions and relies on non-renewable resources. The thinner acrylic layer and shorter lifespan mean more frequent replacements, contributing to waste. Recycling ABS trays is also more challenging due to the multi-layered construction, making them less sustainable. In the UK, where cost often overshadows environmental concerns, these drawbacks are frequently overlooked.
Market Preferences: Europe vs the United Kingdom
In Europe, particularly in countries like France, Spain and Italy, gel coat shower trays (and products) are highly popular due to their alignment with values of quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
European consumers prioritise durability, design flexibility, and eco-friendly materials, viewing bathrooms as long-term investments. Gel coat’s ability to deliver a premium, customisable, and environmentally responsible product makes it the material of choice.
Conversely, the UK market often favours ABS cap acrylic trays due to their affordability. Whilst some UK consumers value quality, the broader market prioritises lower upfront costs, even if it means sacrificing longevity and environmental benefits. This focus on price has made ABS cap acrylic trays prevalent, though they may not match gel coat’s sustainability or aesthetic appeal.
Which Should You Choose?
Choosing between gel coat and ABS cap acrylic trays depends on your priorities. If you value durability, design flexibility, aesthetic excellence, and environmental sustainability—and are willing to invest more upfront—gel coat shower trays, like our Traymate range, are the superior choice. Their longevity, recyclability, and low environmental impact align with Europe’s focus on quality and eco-conscious design.
If budget is your primary concern and you need a lightweight, easy-to-install option, ABS cap acrylic trays are practical. However, their shorter lifespan and higher environmental footprint make them less ideal for those prioritising sustainability or long-term value, as seen in the UK market.
Gel coat and ABS cap acrylic shower trays cater to different needs and market preferences. In Europe, gel coat’s popularity stems from its exceptional quality, design versatility, longevity, and significant environmental advantages, making it ideal for eco-conscious, style-driven consumers. In contrast, the UK’s focus on affordability drives demand for ABS cap acrylic trays, despite their limitations in durability and sustainability. By weighing these factors—durability, design, cost, and environmental impact—you can choose the shower tray that best suits your bathroom vision, budget, and values.
