Home » WHAT HAPPENS TO ACRYLIC WASTE FROM TROJAN’S BATH MANUFACTURING PROCESS?

At Trojan, we believe in sustainability and doing our part for the environment. As one of the leading bath and shower manufacturers in Europe, we take pride in our efforts to reduce waste and energy consumption to improve our overall environmental impact and operate responsibly at a local and global level.

As a leading acrylic bath manufacturer, we have developed and patented an innovative recycling process that reduces landfill and supports a circular economy. But what happens to the offcuts and excess material from our processes?

In this blog, we take you through the journey of our waste acrylic and how we contribute to a more sustainable future as a British bath manufacturer.

During the manufacturing process of both our baths and panels, offcuts and trimmings are an unavoidable by-product. Historically, glass fibre polyester resin reinforced acrylic would be sent to landfill, as the combined materials are not recyclable. As a volume manufacturer we have taken strides to address this problem and reduce our landfill.

At the end of each of our ten production lines are collection carts. Our Huddersfield bath operators place any offcut materials into these carts and during the working day they are collected and sent to one of two specialist on site recycling facilities. Thanks to our partnership with Future Polymers, these waste materials are processed, separated and cleaned of any contamination without using any chemicals. These facilities allow us to process both clean and contaminated plastic waste, ensuring that as little material as possible is sent to landfill.

The processed materials from our site are either sold directly back to our suppliers to create a “closed loop” supply chain or are sold to other industries for reuse, such as the dental industry. This helps us to reduce waste and reinforces our commitment to creating a sustainable production process.

By actively recycling acrylic waste, we are not only cutting down on unnecessary landfill waste but also reducing the demand for virgin materials. This contributes to lower carbon emissions and supports a circular economy, where materials are continuously reused rather than discarded.

Recycling our waste acrylic is just one of the many steps we take towards a greener future. At Trojan, we are constantly exploring new ways to improve our sustainability efforts, from sourcing responsible materials to enhancing our energy efficiency across our production facilities.

Our broader environmental initiatives include using a 500kW solar system to generate renewable energy, sourcing timber only from FSC-registered suppliers and ensuring our plastic packaging contains 30% recycled content.
